IP camera is a standalone system connecting directly to an Ethernet or Fast Ethernet network. These cameras do not need to be attached to a PC in order to operate - they are small computers in themselves, and just plug into the network or a phone line via a box called a router. An IP camera usually stands alone, and combines the functionality of a high-end web camera, the PC and network interface into one network-ready product. A Web Cam requires three components in order to function: the web camera itself, a computer, and dedicated software. A Web Cam does not offer remote administration and viewing. It is often constructed from low-quality components with limited durability, making it unsuitable for serious surveillance tasks. Most Web Cams must be connected within three meters of a computer.

Digital Image resolution is measured in pixels. The more detailed an image is, the more data, and therefore the more pixels, it contains. Detailed images require more space on a hard disk and more bandwidth for transmission.
Depending on the resolution, the frame rate and of course the compression protocol the bandwidth required varies. For MPEG-2; 720 x 576; 50-60 fps it will be somewhere in the lines of 4-15Mbps.
